About us
The seed of the Natural Language Processing (NLP) Laboratory at the NUST Politehnica Bucharest was the NLP postgraduate course launched by Professor Stefan Trausan-Matu in the mid-1990s. Over the past 30 years, many students enrolled in this master's course have been involved in NLP research, and some of them are now members of the NLP Laboratory. Since 2011, more than 30 PhD theses with NLP-related topics have been completed, supervised by Professor Stefan Trausan-Matu since 2007 and by Professor Mihai Dascalu since 2018. Since 2000, numerous research papers addressing NLP topics have been published. Some of these, in historical order, include: metaphor identification, semantic processing using ontologies, Intelligent Tutoring Systems, speech act identification, opinion mining, analysis of Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) conversations, text complexity analysis, serious games, and Deep Learning–based support systems. In addition, interdisciplinary NLP research has been carried out with a strong focus on Human-Centered AI, spanning domains such as Philosophy, Psychology, Music, Philology, and Sociology.
